Either way, in New Dawn, the decision to kill or not to kill is more of an emotional one. The characters have both done horrible things, so why should their lives be spared? This article will discuss some of the implications of these decisions, as well as speculate what the ending might mean for the future of Hope.

The Fate Of The Twins

The Twins wreaked a fair share of havoc through the course of the storyline. Following the fight, Lou will die first from fatal wounds. Mickey, on the other hand, can still be saved. She will state, “do what you’ve gotta do”. Mickey claims that the player can kill her or leave, and she will never be seen in Hope again.

Considering what she has done, and the possibility of her exacting revenge if she remains alive, it is a difficult decision on the player’s shoulders. Those that decide to kill her will not alter the story at all, as the ending with Joseph and his son will not change. However, there are some interesting things to discover if she is spared.

If Mickey Lives

On the first playthrough, it is extremely hard to leave the ruthless killer at large. However, if her life is spared, gamers will be given a message if they return to the site of her sister’s death. A helmet and a note will be sitting at the same location. It will read as follows:

“A deal’s a deal rabbit. I’m out.

You’ll still have some highwaymen to deal with. They won’t want to give up the good life they’ve got here, but that’s your problem to solve.

Me, I’m gonna head back east and look for my mom. A long time ago, our dad made us leave her behind. I’m gonna see if she’s still alive out there.

It’s a long shot, but it’s all I got left.”

Keeping her alive is definitely more rewarding, and it begs the question of whether she will make another appearance. The fact that she fled indicates that Mickey understands the folly of her ways. She may not deserve redemption, but she can be given the opportunity.

Joseph Seed

After Joseph witnesses the death of his son, he realizes the impact of his past transgressions. On reflection, he regrets everything he has done, renouncing a belief that he was the Lord’s shepherd. Joseph looks weaker and more frail than ever as the trees burn behind him. He will pull the gun to his chest and ask the player to exact justice for what he has done. Maybe he deserves to die, but that would also save him from years of suffering.

The Implications Of Killing Him Or Letting Him Live

The lead-up commentary will be the same no matter what, and the only difference is a slight change in dialogue. To let him live and suffer in misery, all gamers have to do is not pull the trigger. If left alive, he will remain on his knees and yell “Release Me!” incessantly. Either way, the ending is the same. Carmina will appear and the player will get to share a beer with her near Rush’s grave. Cheers, clank, and pan to background.

As far as post-scene consequences, well, there are none. No one knows what happened to Joseph in the end. Is he still yelling the same phrase by the cliffside? Possibly. One of the big disappointments of the ending is the fact that there is no conclusion to the story if Joseph is not killed.

Justice Or Languish

This is the quintessential death sentence argument, and ultimately it is up to the individual. After everyone Joseph has hurt, players need to decide whether they would rather he drown in his sorrows for the rest of his life, or be executed for his sins. Both decisions can be justified, and do not make an impact on the post story gameplay.

Hope’s Future In Far Cry

Whether Ubisoft decides to go back to Hope in a later installment or not, there are still a lot of things up in the air. Joseph Seed could be a future antagonist, or a converted protagonist. If Mickey lives, she seems to regret all of the unnecessary violence in her past. Fans already know that Far Cry 6 takes place in a different universe, so the community will have to wait at least a year or two to find out.

For some reason, it feels like the story of Hope has not yet come to an end. There are too many unanswered questions for New Dawn to be the last game in the Montana series.
