The QR code in question is not an Easter egg or a secret in any way. It’s displayed in Far Cry 6 on boxes that are found relatively commonly. This QR code, when looked at with a cell phone camera, pulls up a strange video. Within this video, a map is shown featuring icons for what appears to be three different players. Also on the map are tokens for dangerous creatures, which appear to kill the players.

While it isn’t obvious what the map and other imagery in the Far Cry 6 mystery video directly imply, the hints do seem to convey a clear message. That being that Ubisoft has some type of new Far Cry game or game mode in development. That game appears to have multiplayer, whether it be PvP, PvPvE, or co-op, which could mean it’s anything from a battle royale to a sandbox survival experience.

It’s probably for the best that Far Cry 6’s teaser is so cryptic because, alongside criticism of Ubisoft not iterating enough between franchise releases, it’s being criticized for its multiplayer offerings of late. For example, the recent announcement of Ghost Recon Frontline, a seeming battle royale spin-off of the much-loved co-op tactical shooter series, received a very negative response online.

Ubisoft is going to have to walk a tightrope with the announcement of whatever this Far Cry 6 teaser is for. The teaser is ambiguous enough that it’s unclear what to think about the project. If it’s a battle royale, Ubisoft may want to be more tentative. If it’s something new, it may want to be less subtle.

Still, it’s quite a surprise for Ubisoft to be teasing a new Far Cry experience so quickly with the release of Far Cry 6. It’s a shame the announcement is caught between two frustrating discourses, as Ubisoft wrestles with too-frequent franchise releases and battle royale market saturation.

Far Cry 6 is available now on PC, PS4, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
